Vitamin D Cancer - Does Vitamin D Supplementation Help in Cancer Prevention?
Many research studies on the vitamin D cancer relationship have been
conducted. Many evidences in the form of animal, laboratory and
epidemiologic evidence point towards the role of vitamin D as a
protective agent against some forms of cancer.
Role of Vitamin D in Cancer Prevention
A few dietary surveys have shown that a good intake of dairy foods on a
regular basis is associated with lower incidence of colon cancer. Daily
foods are rich in vitamin D and calcium. This shows that a greater
intake of calcium and vitamin D is helpful in lowering the incidence of
colon cancer.
However, further studies and advanced clinical trials still need to be
conducted in order to conclusively determine -
- the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and cancer risk
- whether supplementary intake of vitamin D plays a protective role
against some forms of cancer.
Therefore, it would be premature to advice vitamin D supplementation
for preventing cancer until such trials are conducted and scientific
evidence is established.
