the vitamins in their RDAs would only prevent vitamin deficiency

Therefore, their claim is that you need to consume more (sometimes even
much greater) vitamins than the predetermined RDAs.
On the other hand, other experts claim that sufficient amount of
vitamins are achieved from food, so there is no need to take any extra
supplements. Furthermore, these experts point towards studies that show
that taking mega doses (large amounts) of vitamins in supplemental form

vitamin requirements can lead to harmful health consequences. This
